About

Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts, University if Maiduguri, was established at the inception of the University in 1975, and it duly took off in 1976. Because the Faculty was small, it was in a composite structure with Education as Faculty of Arts and Education. It was in the 1978/79 academic session that component parts were separated and the Faculty assumed a full status. The Faculty was established to promote and facilitate critical study of the arts through the development of the critical intellect and the pursuit of academic excellence. Initially, this was arranged through offering courses of study and research in such fields as the Languages, Linguistics, History, Islamic Studies, Creative Arts and Mass Communication at undergraduate and, later postgraduate levels.

Liwuram

The Faculty of Arts established Liwuram as journal of the Humanities to provide an outlet for the publication of the product of original research and the creative output of scholars in the Faculty, the University and the international academic community at large. It took many years of planning before the first issue was published in 1986 with Dr. (later Professor) Tanure Ojaide as the first Editor-in-Chief. Part of the delay in its debut was because the Faculty found it difficult to raise the printing charges. This hurdle was surmounted through mandatory contributions from members of the Faculty. After the initial take-off, the Journal went through many periods of crises, leading to failure to publish on many occasions. Sometimes, combined issues, and even double issues were published to make up for missed dates. However, in recent years, the Liwuram has achieved stability and regularity. In 2024, with advent of Volume 25, the Journal has gone online and has acquired internet visibility. This has the potential to widen its distribution, upgrade its status and popularize the Faculty and the University.
